In an era where data breaches and cyber threats are at an all-time high, businesses
face immense challenges in securely sharing sensitive information. Many organizations still rely
on outdated, unsecured methods such as email attachments and consumer-grade file-sharing
platforms, leaving their data vulnerable to cybercriminals and unauthorized access.
To address this growing concern, I collaborated with an elite
cyber-security start-up to design and develop FortiShare, a next-generation secure
file-sharing platform. My goal was to create a solution that not only protected sensitive data
but also provided a seamless and efficient user experience.
Understanding the Challenge
Before diving into the design, I conducted comprehensive user
research to understand the pain points businesses faced when handling sensitive
data. I interviewed security professionals, IT managers, and end-users across multiple
industries, analyzing how they currently shared critical eports and classified information.
Key Findings
Security Gaps: Many businesses still relied on email and
basic cloud storage, both of which had weak encryption and lacked access control.
Usability Concerns: Existing secure solutions were either
too complex for everyday users or failed to integrate with existing workflows.
Compliance Issues: Many industries required strict
adherence to regulatory standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2, yet
businesses struggled to maintain compliance with traditional file-sharing solutions.
Armed with these insights, I formulated a product strategy that
balanced security, compliance, and usability while ensuring seamless adoption
within organizations.
A Secure and User-Friendly Solution
To bridge the gap between security and usability, I focused on developing a product
with the following key features:
End-to-End Encryption
Security was the backbone of FortiShare. We implemented AES-256
encryption for data at rest and TLS 1.3 encryption for data in
transit. This ensured that even if intercepted, the files remained completely unreadable to
unauthorized parties.
Multi-Layer Authentication
To prevent unauthorized access, FortiShare integrated Two-Factor
Authentication (2FA) and Biometric Login (Face ID & Fingerprint),
ensuring only verified users could access and share sensitive files.
Geo-Location Locks & IP Restrictions
We introduced a unique security feature—Geo-Fencing and IP
Whitelisting. Organizations could restrict file access to specific geographic locations or
internal company networks, preventing unauthorized logins from foreign locations.
360° Vulnerability Monitoring
Businesses needed visibility into their security risks. FortiShare provided a
real-time dashboard displaying:
Security Posture Overview: Automated insights into
penetration testing results, file-sharing trends, and potential
vulnerabilities.
Risk & Complexity Reports: A 360° vulnerability
assessment showcasing risk levels, affected endpoints, and recommended actions.
Collaboration Features: Teams could comment on reports,
tag security issues, and attach supporting files, improving cross-functional communication.
Secure Access Control & Audit Trails
For compliance-driven industries, FortiShare enabled Role-Based Access
Control (RBAC), allowing organizations to define user permissions. The system also
maintained detailed audit logs, tracking every access, edit, and download, ensuring full
transparency.
