Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women worldwide, yet many women lack the necessary tools to monitor their heart health effectively. Traditional heart monitoring systems are often inconvenient, difficult to interpret, and do not cater specifically to women's needs. Collaborating with a healthcare startup, I set out to change that by designing HeartGuard, an IoT-enabled mobile app aimed at empowering women to take control of their heart health.
HeartGuard is more than just an app; it is a comprehensive, user-friendly solution that integrates seamlessly with wearable ECG monitors, smartwatches, and other IoT devices. The goal was to provide women with real-time insights into their heart health, equipping them with knowledge and proactive measures to prevent severe cardiac conditions.
To ensure HeartGuard was designed with a user-first approach, I conducted in-depth user research with women who had a history of heart conditions, as well as those interested in preventive heart health tracking. The primary focus was to understand:
Developing an app with cutting-edge AR/VR features came with its fair share of complexities. To ensure a smooth and efficient development process, I structured my approach into three key phases:
Analyzing existing solutions on the market, I evaluated top heart health tracking apps to identify gaps in features, usability, and personalization. I also studied research on women's cardiovascular health, discovering that symptoms of heart disease in women differ from those in men, yet most existing tools do not accommodate these differences.
With extensive research insights, I structured HeartGuard as a user-centered, data-driven, and IoT-integrated app designed to solve the real-world problems of women’s heart health tracking. The primary goals were:
The Live ECG feature enables women to track their heart rate and ECG data in real-time. Whether they are at rest, exercising, or experiencing discomfort, they can monitor their heart activity with ease. The app provides a simple, color-coded interpretation of ECG data, making it understandable even for non-medical users.
With ECG Monitoring, users can review their heart health trends through interactive dashboards, which provide them with actionable insights. The feature empowers women to set personal health goals, track progress, and adjust their lifestyle accordingly.
HeartGuard integrates with various IoT devices such as wearable ECG monitors, smartwatches, and Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure monitors. The Device Connectivity feature ensures all health data is centralized in a single interface, eliminating the need for multiple health-tracking apps.
HeartGuard’s launch was a game-changer for women’s cardiovascular health tracking. The app received overwhelmingly positive feedback, resulting in the following key outcomes:
"This project was such an incredible accomplishment for our start-up, and we could not have done it without you. Your expert knowledge and dedication made HeartGuard a tremendous success. Our team is truly humbled and motivated to continue our mission of bettering women's heart health."
